Gutter Installation Expectations for Contractors & Customers, Cincinnati, Middletown, & Dayton Ohio.
1. Contractors calculate slope of the eaves:
The first task for a contractor is to figure out the slope of the eaves, which then tells you where the water naturally flows in gutter.
Contractors / Installer use a simple, two-dollar item called a line-level. This is a small level attached to a string, which allows you to create a level as long as you need.
Contractors / Installers occasionally find eaves that are so out of level that gutter downspout positions may have to be changed. Contractors / Contractor will talk with home owner if this occurs.
A gutter attached to a long portion of porch roof needs to be sloped to carry the rainwater towards one end and eventually into a downspout. All gutter must slope at least ¼ inch for every ten linear feet to provide proper drainage.
Strike a level reference line, with a chalk-line, and then make a second mark ¼ of an inch below the reference line to indicate the correct gutter slope. Our Contractors / Installers in the Cincinati, Dayton, & Middletown Ohio area use seamless aluminum gutter.
Some portions of the gutter will need to have a ninety-degree turn or elbow on each end. To determine the proper gutter length for the straight section, hold the elbows in place and then mark their ends. From this mark we subtract ¼ inch.
Rain gutter are made of aluminum, copper, plastic or sometimes even wood, but aluminum seems to be the most popular probably because it's inexpensive and easy to install. When you buy rain gutter, you will usually find them in ten-foot sections that need to be measured and cut to length and then hooked together with special connectors. Our gutter Contractors / Installers in the Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Loveland, Mason, West Chester, Fairfield, Dayton, & Middletown Ohio area use seamless aluminum gutter available in a variety of colors.
2. Contractors measure and cut gutter to length:
With the tape measure, measure down from one end of the gutter piece and make a mark at the desired gutter length. Use a combination square to continue that line all the way around the gutter.
Heavy-duty tin snips are the best tool to use for cutting the gutter to length. Start at the top and cut down the face of the gutter first, then make the second cut down the back of the gutter. Finally, crease the gutter and make the third and final cut across the bottom of the gutter. Be very careful! The edges of cut aluminum gutter are razor sharp. Our gutter Contractors / installers in the Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Loveland, Mason, West Chester, Fairfield, Forrest Park, Dayton, & Middletown Ohio area only use seamless aluminum gutter for installation.
3. Contractors attach gutter to eaves :
Use gutter hanging brackets to attach the gutter to the edge of the eaves. The gutter manufacturers suggests placing the gutter brackets six inches from each end and then every eighteen to twenty-four inches for the length of the gutter.
Snap the gutter brackets onto the measured and cut gutter sections and then head up to the roof. To mount the gutter, drive a # 8 x 1 ½" screw through each bracket and into the face-board on the eaves. Our gutter Contractors / Installer in the Cincinati, Blue Ash, Fairfield, Loveland, Mason, West Chester, Dayton, & Middletown Ohio area use seamless aluminum gutter during installation.
4. Contractors attach gutter downspouts:
Mark the location of the gutter dropout prior to install.
A sleeve section is used to connect the downspout to the gutter during installation. To install it, you will have to cut a square hole in the bottom of the gutter. Use the sleeve as a template, lay it on the gutter and trace the outline with a pencil on the gutter.
In order to cut out the gutter downspout opening, contractors use a spring loaded automatic center punch to make a mark in each corner of gutter. Then drill starter holes and cut the gutter opening using a jigsaw. When the gutter opening is cut, contractors file the gutter edges smooth. Our gutter Contractors in the Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Loveland, Mason, West Chester, Dayton, & Middletown Ohio area use seamless aluminum gutter on gutter installation.
Apply a silicone sealant to the lip of the gutter downspout connector, and place it into the gutter cutout and press it into place. Finally, secure the gutter downspout connector with short sheet metal gutter screws.
For the last gutter section in the run, install a gutter end cap. The cap is slipped onto gutter and the edges are crimped with pliers to hold it in position. With the gutter downspout sleeve installed, you are ready to install the gutter.
Once the gutter is attached to the face-board, measure the length for the gutter downspout. Our gutter Contractors / Installers in the Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Loveland, Mason, West Chester, Forrest Park, Dayton, & Middletown Ohio area will be using seamless aluminum gutter.
The two ends on a piece of gutter downspout may look the same but if you look more closely, you'll see that they're not. One end is tapered so that it will slip into the end of the next section. When you are cutting gutter downspout pieces, always cut off the larger end, never cut off the taper. When you are installing gutter downspouts, make sure that the large end is up and the tapered end is down. This will allow water to flow past the joint without leaking. Our gutter Contractors in the Cincinnati, Dayton, & Middletown Ohio area use seamless aluminum gutter for every gutter installation.
Installers assemble the gutter downspout to do a test fit. Install the gutter downspout assembly over the gutter connector and secure it in place with gutter screws. Then fold the aluminum mounting gutter straps around the gutter downspouts and attach them with gutter screws.
5. Contractors connect gutter:
The final step is to connect the straight sections of the gutter to each other and to the corner angles using two-inch strips of aluminum called seamers. Our seamless gutter only has seamers in the corners. Our Contractors in the Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Loveland, Mason, West Chester, Dayton, & Middletown Ohio area use seamless aluminum gutter for install.
Contractors apply a heavy bead of sealant on the inside of the gutter at the gutter joints. This should make the gutter watertight. Allow the gutter sealant to dry and then take a garden hose and put it in the higher end of the gutter to make sure the water is flowing the proper direction in gutter, going into the gutter downspout and not leaking at the gutter joints. Our gutter Contractors / Installers in the Cincinnati, Dayton, & Middletown Ohio area only use seamless aluminum gutter for every installation.
If you have trees that overhang your roof, they are likely to dump leaves into your gutter. We recommend installing leaf guards on gutter anywhere trees might present this problem. There are many types of gutter leaf relief systems, aluminum, steel, plastic. Our estimating contractor can recommend the best solution for your home.
